Ideas for What to Wear at a Family Photo Shoot

It all begins with what kind of vibe you want to express. You can choose comfy casual (think denim or khakis ), something more formal like dressy clothing, and anything in between. regardless, there are a few key things to be mindful of when coordinating everyones attire:

  • whatever theme is chosen it is best of everyone keeps to that, e.g. if everyone is in warm and clothing it will look odd if someon is the group is dressed in a suit and tie.

  • for more than two people, solid colours work best with only one, possibly two others adding in some kind of print fabric that will fit in. It doesn’t have to be “matchy-matchy” but it should compliment the other pieces of clothing.

  • when choosing a monochromatic colour scheme add lots of texture to give depth and character.

  • stick to three colours if possible that includes one or two neutrals. This will make the photo less busy and the focus can then be on the family members.

  • be mindful of footwear. Give them a quick cleaning the day before. If you feel your clothing is tired looking add some cheap sneakers or loafers and the outfit will appear instantly better. Small children that are going to be held can even wear socks or bare feet depending on the season.

  • consider borrowing a few items from a close friend if you can’t quite make it work the way you envisioned. Remember, this is you and your family and your story, so as long as everyone is ‘cleaned up’ your photos will look amazing.

  • bring something extra that you can easily change into or slip over your existing outfit if you want a couple of different shots. For example in a winter photo shoot you can start off in your outer wear then remove your coat, revealing a sweater, for a different look towards the end of the session. During the warmer weather you could add a layer at the end of the shoot for another look.

  • you can add an accessory such as a hat, scarf or sunglasses.

  • be creative, don’t be shy to bounce ideas off of your photographer. They are there to assist you in creating your memories.
